Williamson Wines
Upon seeing the extensive list of varietals, our expectation were pretty low when we set out for this tasting BUT we were pleasantly surprised. Williamson Wines tasting room is just off the main plaza in downtown Healdsburg. For $25pp, we tasted five different wines and had a cheese pairing. Of note, you cannot make a reservation online; best to call.
All of the wines were entirely quaffable. There was nothing wrong with any of them. The Blanc de Blanc wasn’t too yeasty and had note of green apple. The “Captivate,” which was a blend of Chardonnay, Semillon and Viognier, that would go perfectly with your favorite Chinese takeout. And the Tickled Pink —a rosé of cab and merlot – has notes of rose water and shortbread. It screamed for barbecue.
You may be noticing a pattern? Yes, they are all very much food wines.
What surprised us the most about Williamson was the business model. Join their club and bottle you receive comes with a recipe. You can also add on cheese and a spice packet. Each of the wines also got a cutesy name, which makes it incredibly approachable. Husband called this the “perfect mid-westerner wine club” while I think it’s great for anyone who is new wine and wants to learn more, particularly when it comes to pairing.
Note: Williamson is owned by Aussie, so it is no surprise that the Elate is a Shiraz and Cab blend. Although it is named for Penfold’s Grange Hermitage, this wine didn’t take us back to Adelaide as it was missing the signature eucalyptus.
